An overview of the structures of the English Language

Our first workshop was held with the teacher Beatriz Ribeiro Ferreira Pucci, teacher of UNIUBE. Their activities were very interesting. She showed us that it is possible to give a lesson with content and fun. She gave us several activities with listening, speaking and reading. The activities were very productive. In the end, Beatriz asked that put two activities grammatical in our blog. I decided post exercises in the present and past simple. Enjoy!

Remember!!!!

* This is without doubt the most important tense in the English language and we using in a great number of very different situations in our lives. To encourage you to have a look at the below thorough description of the Present Simple, I must also say that this tense seems to be relatively easy to understand for people learning English, which is also why it is the best tense to learn first. OK, now it's time to have a look at the uses of this tense:
  • Facts and generalization;
  • Habits and routines;

  • Permanent situations;

  • State verbs (e.g. be, have, think, know) more;

  • Fixed/ official arragement that we can't change;

* We use the Past Simple to talk about actions that happened at a specific time in the past. The actions can be short or long. There can also be a few actions happening one after another. Generally, there are two important facts to remember about this tense:

  • Events in the past that are now finished ( I went to school);
  • Situation in the past (they lived a normal life until they won a lottery);
  • A series of actions in the past;

    Now you can do the exercises!

1-Use the given words to create past simple sentences. All the verbs have irregular past forms.

1. Mike / throw / the car keys / and Tina / catch / them

2. Who / win/ the Cup/ last year?

3. What / you/ do/ last weekend?

4. We /buy/ Elena some perfume / for her birthday

5. We all /feel ill/ after the meal

6. Where / your father / live/ when / he / be/ a child?

2- Read the text to answer the questions.

St. Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a very old holiday. It goes back to the times of Ancient Rome. One of the characters we often see on Valentine's Day is Cupid. He was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. He shoots people with arrows of love. When a man and a woman are hit by his arrows, they will fall in love.
Today people celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14. Men and women who are in love give each other gifts. The most popular gifts include flowers (especially roses) and chocolates. Couples may also go to a restaurant for a very nice dinner or plan something else romantic.
In the United States, Valentine's Day is not just for lovers. Children make special Valentine's cards for their classmates. Families and friends may give candy or other small gifts to each other. It can be a fun day.

1. Who is Cupid's mother?

a. Sarah, goddess of love

b. Venus, goddess of music

c. Venus, goddess of love

2. What does Cupid use to shoot people?

June 5: World Environment Day

The World Environment Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations - UN, 1972, to mark the opening of the 1st World Conference on Environment in Stockholm, Sweden. At the same time, another resolution also established the UNEP - the UN Program for the Environment. Celebrated in various ways (parades and concerts, competitions ciclísticas or even releases of campaigns to clean the cities), that day is used throughout the world to draw political attention to the problems and the urgent need for action. Ecology - The environment and ecology have become a concern throughout the world, in the mid-twentieth century. But already in the nineteenth century a German biologist, Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), formally established the discipline that studies the relationship of living beings with the environment, to propose in 1866, the name ecology for that branch of biology. Joining the Greek words oikos (home) and logos (study), the discipline was confined to academic circles until very recently. She won only social dimension after a large proportion of accident, which spilled 123 thousand tonnes of oil at sea, the coast of England in 1967 with the oil tanker Torrey Canion.

Alessandra Maria Amarante Masson, is teaches of the Colégio Maria José and Peanuts English School in Poços de Caldas, MG. She gave us on Friday, day April 11, the second workshop and on Saturday, day April 12, the our first immersion. Alessandra certainly that's a good person!
On Friday she gave us several activities in the groups that made us further develop our speech. They were texts, reading, writing , games and other activities very good. During the lecture each group was asked to discuss about a single topic. The topics were: how to teach listening, how to teach grammar, how to teach vocabulary, how to teach speaking, how to teach writing. So, there were 5 groups. My group discussed how to teach to speak. We discussed the various forms which currently has to teach students how to speak. We mentioned that the Internet, the media, music, oral readings and others, are methods that can help students improve their speech. And improving the way of speaking, they can also improve the reading, listening, writing and also to read. And so these students will not be lost in the classroom and will have less difficulties in the future.
On Saturday was wonderful. Alessandra learned show us how it is possible administrating all the ways to teach English in a responsible way and fun. It was a moment of relaxation, joy and great practice in foreign language.
In the morning we did various activities, such as wireless phone, to develop listening and speaking. In the afternoon learned several ways to give a lesson, with dynamic, games and very content. In my opinion Alessandra is an extreme command of English and knows how to make a fun class. It mixes with entertainment content. In making laugh all the time had the didactic to show us that what matters is not only the field, but to merge it with much joy and relaxation. I loved and I am sure we all liked.
